Living Closer to Workplace

According to Habitate ‘happiness is greatly decreased when a commute exceeds 45 minutes’. What can we say about the pandemic? We never even thought something like this could happen even in our wildest dream. It affected all of us. The peril that we got from this Pandemic is indescribable. It hit us hard. The Pandemic locked us in but it unlocked some and certain avenues. Some people tried their hands at cooking, some in painting, others started reading books, some others restarted to hone their singing skills, etc. No doubt, it was frustrating, made us irritable and impatient, kept us away from our dear ones but then we learnt those new things. It definitely made us the see the world in a different way. People who were fortunate to have their family with them, still got to spend the time a little better than others. The bondings strengthened. Some hot strained. And now coming to one striking point.

A topic or debate that was dormant became dominant now. The distance between an employee’s home and her workplace or in other words commuting to work every day in traffic congestion, or those who had to travel long and longer distances for jobs. Now the one question that tops the list is whether living closer to the workplace is a boon/advantage/beneficial? The average time that people around the world spend commuting in one day is about 76 minutes. That equals about 300 hours a year, or more than 35 workdays. Now due to the pandemic, some adjustments were made. Apart from innumerable people losing their jobs, ‘work-from-home’ became the trend. It spread like wildfire. Besides the emergency service holders, offices resumed with this theory. The theory of ‘work-from-home’. The offices operated near normally with this concept. And we all (people who never did this before and the genius IT employees) imbibed this new culture. And now in the unlock phase too, many offices are still following the ‘work-from-home’ concept.

This theory has ripped open the banes of working from the office. Discussing the disadvantages is equal to putting in front the advantages of ‘work-from-home’ or living closer to your workplace. Most often commutes lead to increased stress. Stress about a job and the commute can lead people to feel less motivated, be late more often, absent more often, or can even lead to quitting. They can also put stress on couples and friendships, leaving people with less time to care for their relationships. The breakdown of social life can often result in employees feeling more isolated and depressed. Let me make a hypothetical chart of a person living near to the office. The office starts at 10 am. Wake up at 9:30 am, get dressed by 9:45 am, make a sandwich and leave for the office at 9:55 am, just go round the block and you are the first one to reach the office every day. Howzz it? All because you live near to the office!

A study says that productivity at work goes up when the person travels less and that time saved could be invested in personal development or other activities. People said that they would value 9 hours extra time over 25% premiums on rent. It is very important to stay close to your office. On this note let us talk about transport and transportation charges. Whether you drive your own vehicle or use public transport, you are spending a hefty amount on fuel or fares. Some people have to travel a long distance, some have to change transport several times, so all these puts together becomes a big amount that you have to spend each month. If your workplace is closer you will save a good amount on transportation charges and fuel.

There is one more factor attached to traveling; energy. Again whether you drive or take public transport, you have to cover ‘saat samundar’, and yes it is like that in Bengal. You will get 100 signals on your way to work, wait at each signal, and then a traffic jam is spread over your sandwich…Oh sorry, I mean journey. Also, you might be that person who needs to stand in a long queue to get a shuttle or an auto, etc. And all while you keep standing, your anger shoots up and your energy level keeps decreasing. You will curse (through murmur), blame the government for running fewer autos and buses, get impatient, frustrated, and stress out. And you know our weather! Sorry to remind you but your crisp, ironed shirt will become soggy in perspiration, crumble up, and before you reach office, your nice gelled hair…will become like a crow’s nest. So when you ultimately reach office there is only one line that will suit you; ‘Yeh kya haalat bana k rakhe ho?’ It is important to reduce your body & mental stress during the peak hours of driving or commuting. Because you are already stressed by the time you have reached office and then everything will seem bitter and everyone will seem hostile and your Boss will seem like the worst person in the world. You have no energy left, you are drained. And I am not adding the usual quarrels in transports like stepping on someone’s leg on a crowded bus, or your hair is coming on somebody’s hair or your bag creating a lot of problem for other commuters or your co-passengers. Just imagine your workplace was nearby your home! Then this paragraph would just have been one or two lines maximum.

There are only pros in living near to your workplace. Not only every saved hour can fetch you more time to learn, work fun, socialize with family & friends or relax, you can reduce those commuting costs. Simply living close to the office can save you hundreds, or even thousands, of rupees a year in reduced fuel costs and vehicle maintenance expenses. There is one benefitin living near your workplace, less time in the vehicle also means less air pollution, and that is good for everyone. Do not be so ‘bhullakar’. Don’t you remember your colleague Govardhan, who sits next to you? Just a few months back he bought a one-bhk flat in the office neighbourhood. I am sure you don’t remember the reasons but you surely remember the house-warming party. Dear Govardhan started losing hair, he nearly became bald, he started having all sorts of skin problems, pollution took away all his glamour and then he made the best decision of his life; to move to his office neighbourhood. Now if you look at him keenly, you will notice little new hairs growing back, though there are still some bald patches. The harmful gasses emitted from buses, autos, etc. are really dangerous for your health. You are exposed to it and you even inhale it. Don’t you want to avoid pollution and stay near your office? Also, you are safer (particularly during-post COVID) as you don’t have to be near people on public transport.

Some other extra benefits of living near office:

  • You can do your presentation in the morning.
  • You can hop back home and have your home-cooked meal at lunch; it will save you money and take care of your health.
  • You can reach home early and engage yourself with anything you desire.
  • No problem if you work late also, still you will reach home soon.
