Fed up with the plain and staid?
Throw convention out of the window with these offbeat and quirky interior design options. Innovation in interior design is an essential tool to redefine spaces. Do you want to make a statement and draw attention to your home? Well, try these unorthodox techniques that simple.
Use decorative mirrors to add instant light to your living space
‘Mirror mirror on the wall, which living space is the most beautiful of all?’ It can be yours as mirrors can be intelligently used to make a small space feel larger. For larger rooms or any room with a limited amount of natural light, mirrors placed directly across from the windows will add instant light. Moreover, you can also use decorative mirrors in place of art to fill empty wall spaces. What an idea?, right Sir jee and Madam jee?
‘For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood in every spring there is a different green’ -J. R. R. Tolkien
Putting plants in your living space is a great idea. Plants are an inexpensive way to accessories your space and add colour and texture, in addition to announcing your ‘green way of thinking’. Not only are plants beautiful but can clean household air and balance humidity.
Give window trims a splash of colour
Window trims are an often-overlooked opportunity to make a statement. You can paint them an eclectic green to blend in with the landscape, or even pitch black for practically making them disappear in the evening.
Use wicker baskets
Wicker baskets are an economical and stylish way to add storage to any room. Baskets can be used to display books and magazines and store a large number of other household items. You can place a couple of small wicker baskets in your kitchen countertop to store and display your fruits and vegetables.
Add a hanging pot holder in your kitchen
Incorporating a hanging pot rack in your kitchen is definitely a style statement. Available in various sizes and styles, additional cupboard space is freed up to store other items. Seldom has anyone complained of having too much storage! At least we women will never!
And then there was light
If you have dark coloured walls, brighter lights (and not the general ones) immediately flood the room with a warm and inviting glow. If you have lighter shaded walls, spaced-out lights of a darker intensity increase the charm of your room. If you have a small place, a couple of LEDs work magic, while larger rooms require higher voltage lights to enhance visibility and also allows one to perceive the size of the room.
Often, we don’t know what to do with old worn-out furniture. It generally lies in the storeroom, dying a slow and natural death with insects like white ants calling it home. But you innovate with furniture to your comfort. For example, have that old wooden four-legged chair? Remove one hand rest, increase the height of the backrest in the shape you desire, and place it in the favourite corner. Add a footrest, and you are sorted for a peaceful time reading or having a cup of tea.
Delight the Child
Fairy tales have been the mainstay for all children and stories of Frozen, Toy Story, Cinderella, and a host of other characters are never out of fashion for kids. Even characters are never out of fashion for kids. Can we ever forget Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, among many others? You can customize your child’s room keeping in mind any of these stories or characters, or the ones liked by your child. Wall motifs, paintings, and even flooring carpets and bedsheets can be used accordingly.
Use the 50/150 rule to your advantage
For the perfect colour family, mix one batch of paint 50% lighter than the base and another 150% darker. This is a fail-safe method for stripping a wall and can be tried in the kitchen. This is also a bold way of using colour.
If you want to try something different and utilize knick-knacks, use a bicycle basket or a big wicker basket to host your flower pots. You can decorate them and hone the arty spirit in you to add a dash of colour and style to your plot.
With work from home here to stay, your preference is key, where say if you are inspired by seeing people outside; if colours, lifestyles, design, and the like motivate you, make sure that you sit with your machine facing the window, and your furniture is designed to fit in that way. Also, have comfortable seating arrangements, maybe the old usage of a bean bag, to customize your space and provide you the room to ideate.
Pile on the pillows
Add a dash of colour and luxe by putting more than one pair of pillows in contrasting patterns colours and textures to liven up your sofa.
Now I will tell you something practical. ‘nok-jhok’ with your partner will continue. Don’t be amazed if your choice from the above list doesn’t match your partner’s. Just a suggestion, ‘USE BOTH’. BYE.
