Sustainable Living and Making Sustainable Homes

The pandemic has opened our eyes. Sustainability is no more an option, it has become our way of life. During the pandemic, our lifestyle changed. When there was lockdown over a continuous period of time, we made use of the things very carefully. When we shopped for groceries or non-vegetarian products, we bought the amount precisely needed for us to sustain those numbers of days. Though we stocked up on food or other essential items, we could only buy a certain amount; no matter how much money we had. We could not spend our money on things that were non-essential because it became a matter of living. We bought those things that were absolutely needed for our daily lives. Nothing more. And we survived this critical time because we changed the way we lived. We only ate and lived with things/items/products/services that were highly necessary and also the things that were available. We reduced our demands; we used the only resources that were available to us. In many ways, we curtailed our expenditures as much as possible. We also had no helping hands or support system at that time and we did every work by ourselves. The whole situation proved that we can actually sustain without many things/items/resources that were not available at that time. We used everything to the best of our ability. We maintained a sustainable living.

So why not make our homes sustainable for tomorrow? We were not ready for this pandemic, we never fathomed any such thing to happen but it did. Millions lost their jobs, millions did not get full salary, but we survived. We should make our homes sustainable so that our future generation can survive any grave situation they fall into. Sustainable homes have become an insignia of a responsible citizen. We are very much aware of global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, climate change, etc. These factors have already started to affect our lives and animal lives. Their devastating effects are manifold. Now is the time for people to adopt actions for sustainable living that will in turn reduce the carbon footprint.

The real estate industry has taken up these issues very seriously and is making homes that are sustainable. They are using high-end technology, design, innovation in creating a construction whose every aspect is governed by the principles of effective sustainability. There can be a vast list of ways to make a sustainable living. We will discuss as much as possible. Some are very common like water conservation, planting more trees, not wasting natural resources, etc. Others can be:

Solid Waste Management

The collection, treatment, and disposal of solid waste materials is called solid waste management and can be done through a multi-bin system. The bins should be marked as biodegradable and non-biodegradable. The waste can be sorted into these categories and when a garbage collector comes to pick up garbage, we can put the waste in the particular bins. Also, there are designated bins in and around the complex to ensure mismanagement of the waste that is dumped. Even if there is one residential tower or multiple, proving two types of bins are not costly at all. In this way the solid waste can be segregated and whatever needs to be done with the two kinds of waste, the municipality can do it. This simple practice can make our homes and living sustainable.

Usage of natural cleaning products

Instead of harsh chemicals to clean our toilets and house, we can use natural cleaning products. This will help to keep out the toxins from the wastewater supply and also from your lungs by not inhaling the odour that also contains toxins.

Rainwater harvesting

We have learned about the importance of water in junior classes that was all living things need water to live. Tell me something have you ever wondered about a day without water. What about those days when water suppliers could not give you water because of the lockdown? Yes, some people take water from water suppliers every day. There are of course other ways of getting water. But at that time, we used to buy bottled water that also only as per requirement because shops didn’t have that much stock to provide as many as one wanted. One person could buy only a number of bottled water. I am sure that every drop of water you used in that severe situation made you aware or reminded you what we learned in school days; water is precious, water is scarce and we should not wastewater. Water is used for several purposes; we all use water for different kinds of day to day activities, such as cleaning, washing, bathing, cooking, drinking, and other domestic and industrial uses. Isn’t it enough to understand that we need to harvest rainwater? Rainwater harvesting is the simple process or technology used to conserve Rainwater by collecting, storing, conveying, and purifying Rainwater that runs off from rooftops, parks, roads, open grounds, etc. for later use. Natural water bodies around the projects are also treated as the rainwater harvesting/holding tank for the collection of rainwater from the terraces of the individual buildings.

Must buy recycled items

You will do a lot of good to your planet, yourself, and everybody else if you indulge in buying recycled materials. These recycled materials are very healthy for the environment because it can be recycled again.

Compost

Many people are doing this nowadays. Composting keeps waste out of landfills and makes a nutrient-rich additive for your garden. It is also a great way to reduce food waste. Compost is simply decayed organic matter. A twig can be an organic matter, and does so can a banana peel. When you mix a bunch of these items in a compost pile, they break down naturally into a nutrient-rich fertilizer that helps gardens grow. So instead of using chemical fertilizers for your garden, make compost and use it.

These are some simple changes you can make and undertake for sustainable living. Our future depends on us; so does the future of our next generation and next….
