The shifting trends from houses to condos

Kolkata is one of the best examples of a joint family system. All living together in big mansions. But slowly the concept started changing. From joint families, we became nuclear families. And people started to move out of the big houses. Smaller, standalone houses replaced the huge mansions. Families became smaller and so does the houses. The security, maintenance, and upkeep of such independent properties became cumbersome for the owners. Then apartments started mushrooming everywhere. All old buildings were taken down and flats started to come up in every nook and corner irrespective of the size of the land. The apartment-style living became a staple in urban Kolkata. This is still the trend. But for some years now, we are again seeing a shift in the trend.

Facilities

The apartment culture evolved and took the form of community living and the time of condominiums arrived. What are condos or condominiums? They are ‘private residential units within multiunit buildings, projects, or community’ in a large property complex. Condos offer many amenities. Such condominium projects offer huge gardens, banquet halls, children’s play area, indoor gaming facilities, swimming pools, tennis courts, badminton courts, clubhouse, and gym, jogging and cycling track, elevators, intercom, and many other things. Mini theatre, in-complex grocery stores, food outlets are also available in condos. The affinities for condos are mostly seen in nuclear families but it is prevalent in all types of families. These complexes offer a vast expanse of greenery also that has become a very important factor for physical and psychological well-being for an individual.

Safety & Security

Many condos also offer guest and servant quarters. Not every standalone house could accommodate a full-time helping hand even if you needed one and spaces for guests. One major factor for choosing condos is safety and security. How many stand-alone homes could afford 24 hours round the security? But the condos are very well-secured with CCTVs and security guards. Anyone can trespass in your home but it is not possible in condos. Securities at the entry point make sure they write down the person/s name and other details along with which flat or person they are going to meet. Even at times, they ring the person to check the credentials of the visitor, and then the visitor/s is allowed to go. So there is stringent security in condos.

Socialising

Another very crucial advantage in community living is socialising. Due to our hectic lifestyle, we have pretty much forgotten to talk to people, make friends, invite them over for dinner, etc. After getting home from work even if you spend some time with family, spend time in the gym or garden or clubhouse, you get the opportunity to interact with different people. Whereas if it’s a home, getting back after work, of course, you can give time to your family but there are no other options for socialising. Now if you are super rich and have a bungalow with a swimming pool, own gym, mini theatre, etc. the case is different. Here we are not speaking of exceptions. Therefore, in a condo, you can spend time in various ways and can relax and unwind through different facilities. Many complexes have meditational halls also.

Open Spaces

The wide spectrums of provisions are considered as some of the major factors that are responsible for the rising popularity of residential complexes. As I mentioned earlier, these complexes come with lots of open spaces. Living in such complexes surrounded by nature helps to release our stress and worries. Normally houses do not have such big open spaces. They are like matchboxes, very compact, and congested. Whereas living in a condo with lots of open spaces is ideal for children also. They should run around and play as it is possible here and not concentrate only on mobile phones and games. You can also inhale some fresh air living among such greens.

Less Maintenance and Upkeep

Rather I should say fewer headaches in maintenance and upkeep. A home will either need you to mow the lawns/gardens or to need to keep a gardener; no guarantee on the work if you don’t supervise and mainly no guarantee on how many days that person will turn up. So ultimately it’s on your shoulders. But in a condo, there are designated people for particular jobs. Yes, you have to pay monthly/yearly maintenance costs but apart from that, your headache is not entirely your own. Condos normally have facility managers and their team who are there to fix your plumbing issue, or a broken window, or such works. You will get much better help from the complex committee.

That doesn’t mean condos do not have their share of disadvantages. You are too close to your neighbours, there can be disparity with the monthly/yearly fees, your favourite person might not be chosen as a committee member, etc.

Because practically speaking, you need to adjust where ever you are living and with whom you are living. You can’t get each and everything you want or you can’t be on cordial terms with each and everyone in life, so a condo is no different. Still rationally thinking you are getting numerous facilities only because you live in a condo; it is not feasible if you stay in a standalone home. That is why the pros of living in a condo outweigh its cons. When we think of the numerous amenities that you can get access to, or the safety & security of elderly people and children, or the fact that you get to live in such a big area where you will nearly get all door to door services, you can adjust a little bit for so much.
